A Letter to Annie Webb Blanton - Highlights of Convention
Contributed by Janye Brainard, Alpha State Second Vice President
June 24, 2008
Dear Annie,
I regret that you and the other Founders could not attend the 79th Alpha State Convention in The Woodlands, Texas.
The theme was “A Kaleidoscope of People, Passions, Possibilities.” You would have loved being with the 1,213 registered members and guests.
The Convention Chairman, Pat Osborne, and Co-Chairman, Diane Moose, led the Greater Houston Area members who planned and created a wonderful
convention experience for all of us. Your committee chairmen would revel in the forty-four Continuing Professional Education (CPE) and
Special Interests workshops. Please tell Lela Lee Williams that her desire to explore new techniques was definitely evident.
There were also twenty Society workshops to explain the functions of the committees and exchange ideas and programs.
Of course, I am getting ahead of myself. Let me begin with Wednesday, June 18. Many from across the state came in early and joined the fun of a Pajama Party. You should have seen all the colorful and outstanding outfits. Laughter, door prizes, and renewing of friendships were experienced by all.
Thursday, June 19 was the first full day. Training for the in-coming 2008-2010 chapter presidents was a very full afternoon. Cora Martin never had a teacher training session like this. The Leadership Development for Chapter Presidents (LDCP) was attended by over 217 incoming presidents. The LDCP Committee members had as much fun presenting information as the presidents did participating. Also, on Thursday afternoon the First Timers met with Past State Presidents (PSP’s) to learn about who, what, where and how at an Alpha State Convention. The First Timer ribbons attached to their name tags made asking questions and meeting new friends much easier. Of course, rehearsals of the State Chorus, Necrology Committee and Ceremonies Committee kept those members busy.
Opening Session Thursday evening was exciting. We met Dr. Carolyn Rants who is from Sioux City, Iowa. She arrived at the hotel on Wednesday in a pink limousine! Dr. Rants is currently serving Delta Kappa Gamma as International First Vice President and is the nominee for International President 2008-2010.
Many awards were presented this Thursday evening.
- Jane Nelson, Scholarship Chairman, announced the chapters that contributed to the scholarship programs.
- Patsy Hejl, Communications Chairman, recognized 196 Five Star Chapter Newsletters, seven Members in Print and eight local newspapers.
- Nancy Newton, Leadership Seminar Chairman, recognized the chapters that contributed to the Leadership Seminar Fund.
- JoAnn Brooks, with the help of Area Coordinators, presented the Presidential Award for Chapter Excellence (PACE) to 55 chapters.
